Roy Keane shared a touching story about his only meeting with Irish boxing star Katie Taylor on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast.
Keane developed a no-nonsense reputation during his 12 years at Manchester United, which saw him captain the side for the best part of a decade, and he has brought a similar attitude to punditry since hanging up his boots.
However, Keane demonstrated he has a softer side when the regular podcast team of himself, Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott and Ian Wright were joined by Taylor's promoter Eddie Hearn.
Taylor is widely seen as the greatest boxer Ireland has ever produced after winning five World Championships and Olympic gold in 2012 as an amateur, before becoming undisputed lightweight world champion as a professional.
But she also suffered disappointment at the Olympics in 2016 when she bowed out in the quarter-finals. Keane has revealed he met her shortly after that defeat, and has opened up on the words of encouragement he offered her.
Speaking to Hearn, Neville, Carragher, Scott and Wright on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane said: 'I met Katie once, she came to an Ireland match.
'I spoke to Katie after she got beat in the Olympics [in 2016] and I’d just seen an interview where she was really upset.
'I got in touch with her and just said: "listen, keep your spirits up".
'And that was it. We kept in touch, the odd text here and there.
'But yeah she came to an Ireland match once and I met her. Amazing fighter and she’s certainly doing Ireland proud.'
Keane's story showed a side of him that is rarely seen in public, and Scott responded with 'aww' after hearing it.
It is clear that Keane has huge respect for Taylor, and Hearn revealed the feeling is mutual.
