There were so many players who were handed an opportunity — 20, to be exact — against Wrexham this week that it is difficult to talk about how they all did. One man that did impress, though, is Angelo Gabriel, who came on at half-time in North Carolina.
The 18-year-old Brazilian, who arrived from Santos earlier in the month, was handed his first opportunity to showcase his talents in the famous blue shirt and he took his chance brilliantly. Gabriel played predominantly on the right-hand side but it was a very free role that allowed him to drift in field whenever he fancied.
It seemed to really suit him. The teenager loves to dribble with the ball and look for a pass to break the opposition defence and he did that on numerous occasions in his 45 minutes. With one of the final kicks of the game, Gabriel found Ben Chilwell with a delightfully weighted pass and the left-back finished beautifully to score Chelsea's fifth goal of the match.
After the game, Gabriel was delighted to be handed an opportunity, albeit in just a pre-season friendly. The Brazilian also spoke about the targets the club have for the upcoming season, which could suggest he may be sticking around rather than going out on loan.
«When it comes to Chelsea we have to be fighting for big things and we are very happy,» Gabriel told TNT Sports Brazil. «It will be a wonderful year. I hope we can keep building in the last friendlies.
»God willing we can qualify for the Champions League and win the Premier League title. We will work for it."
