Keith Andrews won’t be idle for long if local reports of his imminent move to Sheffield United’s new management team are accurate.
The former Ireland midfielder last week followed his boss Stephen Kenny out the FAI door after the association opted for a different direction to resurrect the team’s fortunes but the looming change of guard at Bramall Lane could see a new opportunity open up for him.
The Blades are marooned at the bottom of the Premier League table and the expected sacking of Paul Heckingbottom following Saturday’s 5-0 mauling by fellow strugglers Burnley means it is more than likely we will see a return to the hotseat for Chris Wilder.
According to the Sheffield Star, formerly of Wolves, Blackburn Rovers and MK Dons midfielder is on the backroom ticket alongside Alan Knill and Matt Prestridge, the coaches Wilder worked with at Middlesbrough and Watford after departing Bramall Lane.
Wilder's return will come almost 1,000 days after his departure in March 2021, triggered by a breakdown in his relationship with the club’s hierarchy.
However, relations have revived since, with the 56-year-old initially sounded out about his willingness to return to Bramall Lane earlier this season.
Out of work since leaving Watford at the end of last season, Wilder is available and willing to return to his boyhood club and attempt to pull off an improbable great escape.
An announcement on the managerial overhaul is said to be imminent.
