With yet another saga surrounding the future of Kylian Mbappé to come this summer, the forward’s relationship with Paris Saint-Germain appears to be fast approaching a point of no return.
The forward’s refusal to trigger the one-year extension clause in his contract means he would be leaving on a free transfer at the end of next season.
Speaking at Luis Enrique’s unveiling as the team’s new head coach, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi put forward a public ultimatum to the 24-year-old: either sign a new contract or be sold this summer. In practice, though, Mbappé intends to see out his deal and has insisted that he sees himself in Paris next year – beyond that, though, he has remained enigmatic.
L’Équipe indicate this morning that the France captain’s team were surprised by Al-Khelaifi’s decision to go public with PSG’s position – but that their own stance has not changed, and the attacker intends to be back for the start of pre-season in two weeks.
Mbappé is also reportedly puzzled at Al-Khelaifi’s claim that there had been a verbal agreement in place ensuring that the World Cup winner would not leave on a free transfer.
The Frenchman’s team have not responded to L’Équipe’s requests for comment, but the outlet indicates that he has indicated in private that no such promise was made – even if he has publicly stated in the last few years that he would rather earn the Parisians a transfer fee should he leave. However, he is aware that Real Madrid would be unable to match PSG’s demands this summer. The deadlock goes on.
