Levi Colwill explains Mauricio Pochettino decision and speaks on future Chelsea role
Levi Colwill has revealed the decision to bring him off at half-time in Chelsea's win over Newcastle United on Tuesday evening was purely tactical. There were some concerns that Colwill had suffered an injury in the first-half at Stamford Bridge, but instead Mauricio Pochettino chose to change the Blues' approach somewhat.
Chelsea progressed into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Newcastle. The Magpies took the lead early on after Callum Wilson capitalised on some poor defending from the Blues.
However, Chelsea improved drastically in the second-half and piled the pressure on the visitors. A late equaliser from Mykhailo Mudryk ensured the game would head to a penalty shootout, that the hosts ended up excelling in.
Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku and Mudryk all scored from the spot. Meanwhile, Kieran Trippier and Matt Ritchie missed for Newcastle to send Chelsea into the final four of the competition they are looking to win for a sixth time.
Malo Gusto came on for Colwill at the break and many Chelsea supporters were left slightly confused and concerned by the decision. However, Colwill has confirmed he is absolutely fine and is delighted the decision paid off for the team.
«Yeah, I think so,» Colwill told football.london when asked if the decision to bring him off at half-time was tactical. «It obviously worked; winning the game on pens and obviously coming back at the same time. I'm really happy for the team.»
