Liverpool have seemingly been dealt a blow in their hopes to prise promising centre-back Levi Colwill away from Chelsea.
The 20-year-old has risen up the English football pyramid through consecutive loans away from Stamford Bridge - first at Huddersfield Town in 2021/22 and then Brighton & Hove for a breakout year in the Premier League in 2022/23.
Colwill featured 17 times for the Seagulls last season and more recently was part of England's European Under-21 Championship-winning team alongside Liverpool dup Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott. But he is now preparing to return to his parent club, where his future remains shrouded in mystery.
This is due to the fact Colwill's contract runs only for another two years, something Chelsea wish to rectify as they hope not to lose one of Europe's hottest defensive properties on the market.

Speaking on the subject of his future following his Three Lions success, Colwill said: "I’ll speak to my family, speak to everyone I need to and make a decision.
"I've got to play at the end of the day to hopefully get there (England senior team) and go to the next camp.”
Liverpool are just one of a number of clubs monitoring the situation, but as a direct challenger of Chelsea there are a number of hurdles to clear. The latest of which is the state of the Blues' pre-season squad.
On Monday, Chelsea announced the 29-man roster that would be flying to the United States for a list of summer friendlies, with notable absentees being Colwill's follow centre-backs Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.
