THE largest crowd in Anfield history saw Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez score the second half goals that returned Liverpool to the top off the Premier League.
With the newly-developed Anfield Road end fully open for the first time, a record crowd of 59,896 was over 1,000 more than the previous best attendance, set against Chelsea in 1949.
And while they hardly witnessed a vintage display by Jurgen Klopp’s side, it was enough to continue impressive home form that has now seen his team win 10 and draw two of their dozen league games at Anfield this season.
Ahead and apparently comfortable, Liverpool conceded a shock equaliser on the stroke of half-time, courtesy of some terrible set-piece defending from Klopp’s side.
Josh Brownhill swung over a right-wing corner and Dara O’Shea was, inexplicably, allowed to rise unopposed to send a powerful header into the top corner.
Wataru Endo and Diaz were the closest red shirts to the Irish international but hardly equipped to deal with the 6’1” centre-half.
The hosts had taken their time to get into their stride but appeared to have the game well under control when they took a 31st minute lead.
Again, the goal was a result of poor defensive work at a corner, this one taken by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Keeper James Trafford came for the cross, collided with O’Shea and allowed Diogo Jota, one of the shortest men on the field, to head in from six yards.
With Manchester City having beaten Liverpool’s neighbours Everton, to leapfrog above the Reds in the early kick-off, a win was required to return them to the top of the Premier League.
