Kobbie Mainoo left the NRG Stadium with his left foot in a protective boot after he was injured in the early stages of Manchester United’s defeat to Real Madrid in Houston.
The promising teenager went down in the second minute when Casemiro fouled Rodrygo who fell into Mainoo. The 18-year-old had several minutes of treatment but it was clear that he couldn’t continue and Christian Eriksen replaced him.
It was a huge blow for Mainoo, who has impressed enough in pre-season to earn his start against Madrid ahead of Eriksen, Scott, McTominay and Donny van de Beek. The youngster was a picture of frustration as he went off having shone against Arsenal in New Jersey on Saturday and set up United’s first goal for Bruno Fernandes.
Manager Erik ten Hag will wait to assess the damage to Mainoo’s left ankle before deciding if it will affect United’s transfer plans this summer. Fred looks certain to leave after attracting interest from Fulham and missing the tour for personal reasons, while McTominay and Van de Beek could both be sold.
‘You can never tell straight after a game. We have to wait for what it is,’ said Ten Hag. ‘Hopefully he is not too bad and chances will come.
‘I wanted to see what levels he could play against Arsenal. We were pleased with his performance, and I wanted to see if he could repeat that and set conclusions. Now I have to wait for the diagnosis.
‘For us, it was a bad start. An injury for Kobbie Mainoo, he has to get off and then we straight away concede (Jude Bellingham’s goal). Offside, onside, it's very difficult to see.’
