OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER — Manchester United held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw and dented Jurgen Klopp's chances of securing a second Premier League title.
Liverpool led through an acrobatic finish from Luis Diaz and missed a succession of first half opportunities as their hosts failed to muster a shot before the interval. But United clawed their way back into the game and took a 2-1 lead.
They had their skipper, Bruno Fernandes, and 18-year-old sensation Kobbie Mainoo to thank. Jarell Quansah lazily tried to play a square pass to Virgil Van Dijk, but it never reached his captain. Fernandes intercepted and his sweetly struck first-time effort soared beyond Caoimhin Kelleher.
Mainoo then channelled his inner Federico Macheda as he took a touch past Curtis Jones and picked out the far right corner superbly. His first Old Trafford goal made him the youngest United player to score a Premier League goal against Liverpool.
United then conceded their third penalty in two games and it was another sloppy challenge by a tired-looking defender. This time it was Aaron Wan-Bissaka who brought down Harvey Elliott in the box.
Mohamed Salah converted from the spot with conviction and has now scored more Premier League goals against United (11) and at Old Trafford (six) than any other opposition player in the competition’s history. He also became the first visiting player to score in four consecutive league games at the Theatre of Dreams.
