Mariners forward Angel Torres stood down after being charged with sexual assault

Football Australia has imposed a no-fault suspension on Angel Torres after the Central Coast Mariners forward was charged with sexual assault.

Torres was arrested at a property in Terrigal on Monday in relation to an alleged sexual assault of a 21-year-old woman on March 24.

“He was taken to Gosford Police Station where he was charged with two counts of common assault, intimidation, and aggravated sexual intercourse without consent,” NSW Police said in a statement provided to foxsports.com.au.

“He will appear before Gosford Local Court on Monday 6 May 2024.”

The Mariners released a statement on Tuesday evening confirming the club was aware of the charge and that Torres had been suspended on a no-fault interim basis by FA.

“The suspension is a precautionary measure that suspends the player from participating in football and club related activities,” the statement read.

“It is important to note that Football Australia in imposing this interim suspension is making no finding of guilt or fault in respect of the offences with which Torres has been charged. Such charges remain matters to be determined by the Courts of New South Wales.”

A spokesperson for the A-League’s administrative body, the Australian Professional Leagues, said in a statement provided to foxsports.com.au that it was aware of the charges laid against Torres.

“We understand that Football Australia has immediately imposed a no-fault suspension,” the statement read.

“It is important to note that in imposing this interim suspension Football Australia is making no finding of guilt or fault in respect of the alleged offences with which Mr Torres has been charged.
