Speaking at a press conference in Japan, Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos (29) tentatively responded to a question about the ongoing Kylian Mbappé (24) saga, which has seen the France captain omitted from the club’s pre-season tour.
Mbappé was omitted from PSG’s travelling group for the tour of Japan and South Korea earlier this week. The move is an attempt to put pressure on the Frenchman. PSG’s stance is clear: trigger the one-year extension included in the contract, or be sold this summer. Mbappé has no designs on triggering the extension, but nor does he want to leave Les Parisiens this season. The club believe that the AS Monaco academy product has a pre-contract agreement to join Real Madrid in 2024.
Mbappé is therefore still in Paris, maintaining his fitness levels, whilst the rest of the squad are on the other side of the world, preparing for the upcoming season. There is no getting away from the Mbappé saga, however, and club captain Marquinhos was asked about the situation.
“It is a delicate question. He is an exceptional player. It is a player that is above the players. It concerns the management. I hope he can be part of the group and help us this season,” said Marquinhos in a conference transcribed by RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins. Mbappé hopes so too, but the decision isn’t necessarily his to make.
