Mikel Arteta was unable to select Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard against Newcastle United on Saturday evening. The Norway international was not passed fit in time to face the Magpies as the Gunners lost 1-0 at St. James' Park.
Odegaard scored a late consolation goal against the Hammers as Arsenal crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night — playing just 10 minutes at the London Stadium. football.london understands the 24-year-old was assessed ahead of the Newcastle clash, but was ruled out despite his injury not being a serious concern with there being a possibility he could return to action against Sevilla next week.
Ahead of the clash against Newcastle, Arteta said: «Yeah he is not available, he's not fit. We cannot play him, he's our captain and a really important player but it's an opportunity for another to stand up and have a great performance.»
