Mauricio Pochettino admitted 'things could happen' when asked about Manchester United's interest in Marc Cucurella.
Tyrell Malacia has been absent with an injury since pre-season and Luke Shaw has sustained a muscular issue which could potentially have him sidelined for two months, which is why Erik ten Hag is keen to sign a left-back.
Cucurella has emerged as the preferred option at Old Trafford and United have opened talks with Chelsea over a short-term deal, meaning the Spaniard could join on a season-long loan or just until the January window.

Chelsea could also seek to include an option to buy in any deal and the details of the transfer are currently yet to be finalised. It's understood the clubs are in the process of negotiating a loan fee and that is the only likely stumbling block.
Chelsea were in Carabao Cup action on Wednesday night and Pochettino spoke at a press conference after that fixture.
"I don’t know anything. Maybe you know better than me," Pochettino said when asked about Cucurella.
"All they players that are involved every day in the training ground who are training with us are in our plans.
"And then, like you know, things happen because it is the decision of both parts, the player and the club, if something happens in the next few days we’ll communicate to you."
Cucurella became the joint most expensive full-back in Premier League history when signing for Chelsea for £60million last year.
United have also looked at Tottenham's Sergio Reguilon, Barcelona's Marcos Alonso and Lyon's Nicolas Tagliafico as options for cover.
