Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed Chelsea will assess the situation with Christopher Nkunku and his injury before diving into the January transfer market. The France international recently picked up a hip problem after previously being sidelined for six months with a knee injury.
The 26-year-old, who signed for Chelsea in the summer for around £52million, has featured just four times for the Blues since arriving. Nkunku made his debut for the club last month in a brief cameo against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup and played three times following that.
However, he is now set for a spell on the sidelines with a fresh hip problem. Nkunku has not been able to train with the rest of the squad at Cobham for the last 10 days but Pochettino does not yet know how long the Frenchman will be missing for.
Chelsea were somewhat relying on Nkunku to come back and help solve their problems in front of goal. With Nicolas Jackson currently at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, it leaves just Armando Broja, who has had his own injury problems over the past 12 months or so, as a centre-forward option.
That could lead Chelsea into the market for another attacker. Pochettino, though, still wants to sit down with the sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley to discuss whether it will force their hand.
«It's true that now in the next few days that we are going to see the situation,» Pochettino told reporters at Cobham. «That's why I told you that I am a little worried.
