The Italian Finance Guard (financial police) inspected Milan's headquarters on Tuesday for documents corroborating the transfer of the club, now in doubt, from the US investment fund Elliot, the theoretical former owner, to the also American RedBird Capital, allegedly the current owner of the 'Rossoneri' club.
The Milan prosecutor's office (north), according to local media, is investigating the Italians Ivan Gazidis and Giorgio Furlani, former and current executive director of the club, under the hypothesis of a crime of obstruction of the supervision activity of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on the legal requirements of the companies that own football clubs.
Milan could still be owned by the Elliot Fund and American Paul Singer despite the fact that fellow countryman Gerry Cardinale, chief executive of RedBird Capital, is listed as the club's owner from August 2022.
If that assumption is confirmed by the search of Milan's headquarters and the phones and computers of the investigated Furlani and Gazidis, and the club remains under Elliot's ownership, he would have violated UEFA regulations, as he is also the owner of Lille and cannot be in charge of another club.
Milan, for its part, acknowledged the search and the investigation related to possible transfer and ownership irregularities, but denied any wrongdoing.
"In relation to the search that has taken place at its headquarters, Milan takes a position alien and strange to the ongoing proceedings relating to the acquisition of the same, finalised in August 2022," the statement read.
