AS Monaco U19s booked their place in the quarter-final of the Al-Abtal Cup, beating Juventus 4-1 in their final group stage match, held at the club’s training centre in La Turbie on Wednesday.
Les Monégasques needed just a draw to progress, but managed much more than that, swatting aside their Italian counterparts. Sandro Bertolucci (18) did much of the damage, netting an 11-minute hat-trick either side of half-time, which put Frédéric Barilaro’s side in the driving seat.
Any hopes of a Juventus revival after Diego Pugno halved the deficit in the 52nd minute were extinguished by the prolific Bertolucci, who netted his third just seconds after the Italian side’s only goal of the game. Abdoulaye Diagana completed the scoring in the 80th minute as Monaco comfortably progressed to the knockout stages of the Al-Abtal Cup. The result allowed them to finish ahead of Slavia Prague.
The result caps a good week for Monaco, who beat local rivals OGC Nice on Saturday. Attention now shifts back to the Championnat National U19, with a trip to Corsica to face AC Ajaccio coming up on Sunday.
