Nemanja Matić (35) held showdown talks with the Stade Rennais hierarchy on Monday, however, the deadlock wasn’t broken, with the Serbian still keen to seal a move to Olympique Lyonnais.
In a spectacular move to force a transfer away from Rennes last week, Matić left the city of Rennes, emptying his locker at the club’s training ground before doing so. Ultimately, having failed to force through a departure, Matić made an apology on social media and returned to Rennes.
Talks were scheduled to take place on Monday morning, but those discussions have failed to yield a conclusion. According to L’Équipe, Matić remains keen on a move to Lyon, but Rennes don’t want to sell the Serbian international to a Ligue 1 rival. Foot Mercato had reported last week that the former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder was keen on a return to the Premier League, with Fulham interested.
Matić’s and Rennes’ stances are therefore unchanged. It was agreed that the midfielder, whose contract with Les Rennais runs until 2025, will remain exempt from attending training. It was agreed that both parties would try to facilitate a departure, even if SRFC retain their stance of not selling to a French rival.
