Takehiro Tomiyasu is set to be sidelined for an extended period after suffering a calf injury in the win over Wolves. Mikel Arteta had initially hoped that the Japanese international would be fine but the results of an assessment have delivered a damaging blow.
“We had a scan, and it’s not good news,” Arteta said post-match. “He’s got an injury in his calf, and he’s going to be out for a while.”
Ben White came into the team and provided an assist for Gabriel Jesus but struggled defensively to cope with Ross Barkley who beat the England international before shooting past David Raya. The full-back will be expected to maintain this spot for some time now considering football.londonunderstands that Tomiyasu is set to be missing for between four and six weeks.
This leaves Mikel Arteta with just five senior defenders to have started games this season. White, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior have all begun games in the back line so far this season.
Cedric Soares has featured only as a late substitute in the League Cup win over Brentford. Jurrien Timber, Thomas Partey and now Tomiyasu are all absent.
The January transfer window is just weeks away now as 2023 comes to a close. Naturally, the injury to Tomiyasu and persistent problems with other members of the defensive core have the club on red alert for potential opportunities in the market.
