Newcastle United are set to challenge Man United for the signature of centre-back Axel Disasi, according to a new claim.
The Monaco defender has been a long-time target of Erik ten Hag's Red Devils, who were thought to be in pole position to sign the 25-year-old Frenchman.
But by failing to make a formal offer for Disasi, they now face competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle - who finished just a place behind them in last season's table.
Fabrizio Romano shared the story on Twitter, writing: 'Newcastle and Manchester United are both exploring Disasi deal, no bids yet.
'Newcastle approached player side this week, expected to make contact with Monaco.
'Ten Hag approved Disasi — talks for weeks on player side but still waiting for approach with Monaco.'
Disasi made 49 appearances in all competitions for Monaco last season, scoring six goals and notching four assists in a stand-out individual campaign.
Last month, it was revealed that London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea were also scouting the possibility of bringing Disasi to the Premier League to strengthen their own backlines ahead of the new campaign, which begins in August.
When Disasi joined Monaco three years ago, he explained his best defensive qualities - and this was reshared by Manchester Evening News in light of his potential move to the Red Devils.
Disasi said: 'My size is an advantage, I am comfortable in the air and in my sense of anticipation.
'I also try to play the ball out from the back cleanly, to have fun on the pitch and above all to follow the coach's instructions. I'm a player who works for the team and I hope to bring my defensive strength to bear.'
