Nottingham Forest have opened talks with Monaco for left-back Ismail Jakobs, 23, with Chelsea's Ian Maatsen proving too expensive.
Steve Cooper is desperate to add more defensive prowess to his squad and Jakobs could be a good fit.
The Senegal international, born in Germany, has been a mainstay at Monaco for two seasons after joining from Koln.
Forest had been eyeing up a £15million move for Chelsea's Maatsen - who has several suitors but wishes to stay at Stamford Bridge - but the 21-year-old proved to be out of their price range.
Now Jakobs, who has Champions League and Europa League experience, is the target.
Though he now represents Senegal, at U21 level, he played for Germany and won the 2021 U21 European Championships with them.
Until recently, the Reds had had a quiet transfer window, especially in comparison with the activity of the last two, during which time they signed 30 players.
However, they have added Chris Wood from Newcastle, Manni Norkett from Manchester United, Ola Aina from Torino, and Anthony Elanga from United on a £15m deal.
Forest have been making various upgrades to their facilities and staffing to make themselves even more competitive in the Premier League.
There is a new dressing room at the training ground, extra data analysts, and a £2m renovation of the pitch at the City Ground. They also have a new focus on nutrition and injury avoidance.
