Olympique de Marseille have confirmed that director of football Javier Ribalta has left the club, whilst a restructuring of their organisation was also announced.
Ribalta’s future at OM has been in question for many weeks. Alongside other executive members, including President Pablo Longoria, Ribalta stepped back from his role following reported threats and insults, levelled at the club’s hierarchy during a meeting with supporter groups. Whilst others returned, Ribalta did not, and his departure has now been confirmed.
Marseille thanked Ribalta for his “commitment and professionalism” to the club during his stay. Pedro Iriondo will remain at the club as the director in charge of strategy and development. Stéphane Tessier will continue as a general manager, charged with running operations, business, administration, finance, communication and also the sporting elements. The latter function will be reinforced, with RMC Sport reporting that former Juventus and Bayern Munich defender Mehdi Benatia will join Les Phocéens as a replacement for the departed Ribalta.
