‘Ought to be embarrassed with himself’: A-League star blasted over acting in bizarre red card
An utterly bizarre straight red card has soured Newcastle’s 3-1 upset win over Sydney FC in the A-League on Sunday afternoon.
The Jets were leading 2-0 when Sydney forward Robert Mak raised his left arm while walking away from the Jets’ Phillip Cancar, knocking the latter in the face.
“He’s just trying to say leave me alone,” commentator Simon Hill said.
“You’ve got to be careful when you’re throwing your arms around.”

After a beat, Cancar fell to the ground in pain, and the referee determined the incident was violent conduct warranting the straight red.
It seemed clear he was simulating the effect of the contact and was roundly criticised by fans and analysts alike.
“Cancar ought to be embarrassed with himself,” the SMH’s Vince Rugari tweeted.
