Howard Webb described Malo Gusto's tackle on Matty Cash in Chelsea's 1-0 loss to Aston Villa two weeks ago as a 'clear red card' after another spell of controversial refereeing decisions. Webb also explained calls made by officials under his watch during another breakdown of released VAR audio.
It comes after Gusto served the last of his three-game suspension following the straight red card against Villa and the Frenchman will now be available for selection once more. Gusto's absence for Mauricio Pochettino has seen the Blues turn to Marc Cucurella in an unnatural right-back role with Reece James injured.
Chelsea have now won three in a row without their back-up defender, though, but went on to lose the clash with Villa, conceding less than 15 minutes after going down to 10-men when Ollie Watkins fired in.The decision by Jarred Gillett to send Gusto off wasn't a popular one at the time though.
Gillett had already angered the Stamford Bridge crowd and Chelsea players with a number of contentious decisions throughout the game, including cutting first half stoppage time short by over 90 seconds. However, the biggest call came when he was adviced to review his yellow card handed to Gusto shortly after the break.
Gusto had originally been booked for his forceful challenge on Cash by the duggouts but immediately the officials spotted a foul with the linesman on the touchline saying 'I think it's a foul,' after Gillett, stood behind the action, had said 'tackle's fine.' From then the discussions took place between the on-field and VAR team with the fourth official advising a yellow card: «It's a caution for me, it's a caution for me mate.»
