Phil Foden believes he is playing the best form of his career as he looks to cement his place at number 10 for Manchester City - even with Kevin De Bruyne back in the team.
Foden scored two well-taken goals against Huddersfield to lead City into the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday. In his last six games since being moved behind Julian Alvarez, he has four goals and four assists.
Such stats would usually see a player continue in that position for the foreseeable future but Foden will be looking over his shoulder with De Bruyne back and building up his fitness. When the Belgian made his long-awaited comeback on Sunday, Foden moved into a false nine position, seemingly underlining the number 10 hierarchy.

Guardiola insists both players can play together, given their talent and compared the duo to Barcelona stars Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets playing in the same midfield at Barcelona. Foden says he wants to continue at the top of midfield and has told Guardiola he is feeling better than he ever has at City, even if there is still plenty to learn.
“It’s where I want to be – I’m enjoying it a lot," he said. "Long may that continue. I seem to be playing my best football at the moment and I want to keep doing that.”
"You’re a lot more involved [in the centre], there’s a lot more to focus on. You’ve got a lot more people around you. It’s difficult and there’s still things I need to get better on and I’m trying to do that.”
