Midweek action in the DStv Premiership saw Orlando Pirates held ahead of the Soweto derby, while Stellenbosch FC got the better of their neighbours Cape Town City to continue a great campaign for the team from the winelands.
Pirates took an early lead in their home match against Cape Town Spurs on Wednesday night, with Relebohile Mofokeng scoring in the 12th minute, but the Urban Warriors hit back in the second half via Gabriel Michael to secure a share of the spoils. The Buccaneers were also denied a stonewall penalty late in the game.
Wednesday also featured a third successive league win for Sekhukhune United, who defeated Royal AM 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Maloisane Mokhele, while Chippa United produced the biggest win of the midweek, as they crushed 10-man Richards Bay 3-0.
Justice Chabalala, Craig Martin and Kayden Francis netted for the Chilli Boys, while the Natal Rich Boyz had Abdi Banda sent off for a second bookable offence 10 minutes into the second half.
Tuesday’s action was headlined by a Cape derby, which saw Stellenbosch FC claim a 1-0 win away to Cape Town City. Devon Titus struck just after the half-hour mark to secure a league ‘double’ for Stellies over their rivals, and also push themselves up to second place on the table.
Also on Tuesday, Kaizer Chiefs claimed a first win of 2024, as Wandile Duba’s first senior goal saw them defeat Golden Arrows 1-0, while AmaZulu and Moroka Swallows drew 1-1 at the King Zwelithini Stadium after goals from Riaan Hanamub and Augustine Mahlonoko respectively.
