'Quirky' pub full of 'memories' has been loved by generations of Scousers

There aren't many pubs like Peter Kavanagh's.

Found among the elegant terraces of Egerton Street in the Georgian Quarter, the Grade II listed pub is as distinctive as they come. The grand building catches the eye, drawing you inside to be met by its idiosyncratic and retro interior.

The walls are adorned with all sorts of trinkets and other items collected over the years - including bikes, old radios, musical instruments and even containers filled with the ashes of former punters. It also boasts a fine selection of beer (with rotating local ales) and plenty of great spots to drink in - with stained glass windows and snugs with wooden benches the highlights.

Built in 1844, the pub became a licensed “beer house” in 1854 and has also been known as The Liver, The Liver Hotel, The Grapes, Peter’s Hotel and Peter’s over the years. It was renamed in 1978 to honour Peter Kavanagh, who was its licensee from 1897 to 1950.

Peter commissioned the pub's refit in 1929, as Scottish painter Eric Harald Macbeth Robertson produced murals based on the work of Charles Dickens (scenes from The Pickwick Papers are in The Pickwick Room – the front room) and William Hogarth (scenes of drinking and merriment are in the Hogarth Room – the back room).

Landlady Rita Smith spoke to the ECHO in 2022 as she marked 30 years at the helm at Peter Kavanagh's.
