Rabbi Matondo hands Rangers injury boost as Ibrox last-gasp hero targets derby goal repeat
Rangers could be boosted by the return of Ibrox Old Firm hero Rabbi Matondo for Saturday's massive Scottish Premiership showdown against Celtic.
The wide man – who notched the last gasp leveller in last month’s 3-3 draw – sat out the last two games but the Wales winger IS set to train this week. Matondo’s sensational Celtic strike scooped goal of the season at the PFA Scotland awards on Sunday night and he’s set his sights on a repeat.
He said: “We’ll see, that’s the aim. We’re just ticking boxes this week and if I’m involved I’ll look forward to trying to help the team. If I could score another goal like that it would be unbelievable. It's a nice pressure (the title race). It's where we want to be at the start of the season, albeit we'd like to have more points. But it's where we aspire to be and everyone is relishing the challenge."
Speaking at the glitzy dinner where he picked up his award for best goal he joked about the injury time strike: "It was a mishit! Nah, I'm joking. It was a nice goal. The occasion helped a lot but we would have liked to get the win in the end. I'll always remember it.
Rangers boss Philippe Clement said before Sunday's win over Kilmarnock at Ibrox that there was no timescale for the return of Matondo or fellow winger Abdallah Sima as he ruled out Connor Goldson, Oscar Cortes and Danilo.
The Belgian said: "Abda is out now individually training and I hope to see him back before the end of the season but no timescale yet. Same thing for him (Matondo)." But Matondo appears more positive.
