The Premier League and EFL have introduced new rules for the new season in a bid to help match officials but Man United star Raphael Varane has appeared to criticise the changes
Officials will crackdown on time-wasting and dissent across the Premier League and EFL as part of the new refereeing guidelines. There is also set to be a much stricter method utilised of the bench and technical areas.
Injury-time at the end of both halves will also be impacted, similar to the World Cup. For Ipswich Town's 2-1 Championship win over Sunderland on Sunday, 13 minutes of additional time were added at the end of the game.
In Arsenal's Community Shield win over Manchester City, referee Stuart Atwell was at the centre of attention with a number of decisions questioned. In the first-half, Thomas Partey and Julian Alvarez received yellow cards for kicking the ball away.
The weekend's officiating was the first taste of what's to come for the 2023/24 Premier League season. However, Varane has released a statement on his Twitter account to argue against the ruling against dissent.
"We had a meeting last week with the FA. They recommended from the referees new decisions and rules," he wrote. "From the managers and players, we have shared our concerns for many years now that there are too many games, the schedule is overcrowded, and it’s at a dangerous level for players' physical and mental well-being.
"Despite our previous feedback, they have now recommended for next season: longer games, more intensity, and less emotions to be shown by players. We just want to be in good condition on the pitch to give 100% to our club and fans. Why are our opinions not being heard?
