When Tom Brady and Wayne Rooney cross paths in Birmingham perhaps the best ice breaker will be the NFL legend reminding the former Manchester United and England star of his thoughts on Super Bowl XLVI in 2012.
Rooney was among the millions tuned in to see Brady and the New England Patriots lose to the New York Giants, 21–17.
'Trying to watch Super Bowl final,' Rooney tweeted. 'How do they call this football. Like watching paint dry. Looking forward to adverts and music.'
Now it is a different brand of football that has brought them together. Specifically, football in the EFL Championship with the mission to restore Birmingham City to the Premier League.
There has never been anything quite like two sporting titans joining forces like this, with Rooney penning a three-and-a-half year deal to replace John Eustace as manager.
Both are certified winners, that much is clear.
Rooney, Manchester United's all-time leading goal scorer and until earlier this year England's record scorer, can look up to the boardroom to see a man who won seven Super Bowl rings and is widely considered to be the NFL's all-time greatest player.
'I have spoken to Tom,' Rooney said in his opening press conference. 'He is very ambitious to move this club forward.
'It’s great to have him here, it’s important for the players to see Tom Brady have an involvement. It’s very clear that Tom is fully involved in the club.'
Even off the football pitch they have plenty in common - not least, parenting.
Rooney has four sons with wife Coleen: Kai, Klay, Kit, and Cass. Brady has two sons and a daughter - Jack, Benjamin and Vivian.
