Roy Keane has made a bold prediction about whether Manchester United can challenge for the Premier League title this season.
The Red Devils returned to the top four under Erik ten Hag last season and the sense of expectation has sharpened with some expensive summer signings.
While £72million man Rasmus Hojlund remains injured, £47m Andre Onana and £60m Mason Mount both made their Red Devils bows on Monday as they scraped a 1-0 win over Wolves at Old Trafford.
Controversy surrounded the game when debutant goalkeeper Onana clattered into Wolves substitute Sasa Kalajdzic, sending him to the floor, and referees' boss John Moss apologised to Wolves manager Gary O'Neil after the game after no penalty was awarded.
According to United legend Keane, a title tilt in the face of bitter rivals Manchester City is a step too far for his former club this campaign.
Asked if United could challenge City for top spot this year, he told Sky Sports: 'No, I don't think so.
'I just think it's so hard to see beyond Man City. Again, I've said before, unless they really drop off and get really bad injuries and lose that hunger, then I think the other teams have a chance.
'United will be top four, Arsenal have improved, look at Newcastle. Aston Villa will respond well to it [losing 5-1 to Newcastle], obviously Liverpool and Chelsea, for a lot of them teams it's about being top four and that's the same for United.'
Meanwhile, Manchester City kicked off their Premier League title charge in barnstorming fashion with a 3-0 win over Burnley on Friday.
Two goals from Erling Haaland and one from Rodri was enough to see them to a comfortable win over the newly promoted Lancastrian outfit at Turf Moor.
