Luke O’Donnell has signed pro terms with Ruaidhri Higgins’ side
Derry City boss Ruaidhrí Higgins has received a boost with the new season drawing closer.
The Candystripes, who entertain Drogheda United on the opening night on February 16, have welcomed Cameron Dummigan, Will Patching and Adam O’Reilly back into their squad.
The trio got their first taste of pre-season action in City’s 3-0 win over Institute and they are all expected to feature against Dundalk in Friday’s final friendly before the big kick-off.
“It’s a big bonus seeing a few of the lads who had niggles over the last couple of weeks getting out onto the pitch and the squad is in good shape,” stated Higgins.
“It’s another one ticked off and we’re getting closer to the season now.
“We’re only a couple of weeks away and the anticipation will start growing over the next couple of weeks.
“Pre-season can be difficult from a motivational point of view but it’s about getting people fit and keeping them fit and making sure everyone has got the right amount of minutes under their belt going into it.”
One man who has shone during pre-season is teenager Luke O’Donnell and his fine form has been rewarded with his first professional contract.
The midfielder, who made his senior debut in Derry’s win over St Patrick’s Athletic at the end of the 2023 season and has been subject of transfer talk, says he is focused only on the 2024 campaign.
The 16-year-old has signed a 12-month deal with the Foylesiders and Higgins believes he has a bright future ahead of him.
“We’re aware that there has been interest in Luke from clubs outside of Ireland but at just 16, he has time on his side,” stated the Derry gaffer.
