Harry Kane’s 50th and 51st goals in Europe clinched a priceless Champions League comeback for Bayern Munich last night, the Englishman ensuring he might yet lift the biggest trophy of all in his first season in Bavaria.
However bruised they are by their blundering Bundesliga title defence – Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen are now 10 points clear at the top of the German table – Kane made sure their season did not end in March at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern trailed Lazio by a single goal from the first leg – a loss which contributed to confirmation that Thomas Tuchel will step down this summer. There was talk yesterday of him being shoved sooner if elimination was confirmed here.
Instead, Bayern displayed the dominance they have been lacking domestically with Manuel Neuer not needed to make a single save.
Kane scored twice, the 30-year-old predator taking himself to 33 goals in 33 games since signing for £86.4million from Tottenham, while Thomas Muller headed home Matthijs de Ligt’s scorching volley.
The Champions League final is set to be held at Wembley Stadium in June – an arena that Kane knows, loves and wants to grace with Bayern. Even by the end of this win, he was tracking back to tackle Matteo Guendouzi, with the home support responding by showing their love for him.
‘It was an important night,’ Kane said after saving Bayern's season from imploding. ‘It can really change the momentum of the season.’
Alonso will remain on Bayern’s radar in their search for a successor – if you can’t beat them, buy them – but Tuchel can at least retain hope of achieving something special before his departure.
