Steph Catley has led the Matildas throughout the World Cup in the absence of Aussie superstar Sam Kerr in more ways than one.
A seemingly reluctant leader who seemed more than happy to relinquish the captain’s armband as soon as Kerr played her first minutes, Catley has led the Aussies brilliantly as the Matildas look for its best ever World Cup performance with a win over France.
Australia has now made the World Cup quarters for the fourth time (2007, 2011, 2015 and now 2023) but never made it beyond.
But while her on field leadership has been outstanding, the defender has also stood up when it’s mattered most — during penalty shots.
Kerr is generally Australia’s penalty-taker but Catley has relieved her of that role as well, converting two opportunities from two attempts during the World Cup, including the decisive goal against Ireland which gave the Matildas a 1-0 win in front of a record crowd at Stadium Australia.
She also scored the fourth goal from the spot in the Matildas’ 4-0 win over Canada, which helped Australia top the group.
But while Catley stepping up to the spot may have surprised some, her fiance Dean Bouzanis, who is a goalkeeper for English League One side Reading in the third-tier of English football, was not surprised at all.
Speaking to KIIS FM’s Jase and Lauren, Bouzanis revealed Catley had schooled him from the penalty spot when they started dating.
“When we first started dating I remember Steph was at Orlando (in USA), and I was at Melbourne City and in my off-season I travelled over, and I had to start doing a pre-season training schedule,” he said.
“And Steph was like at the end of the session — mind you I was very tired because I had been running — she decided to take some pens against me.
