OK, it’s time for some serious questions to be asked of Steve Clarke.
Who exactly is this big showstopper parading around Europe in dark blue shirts and what precisely have you done with our national team? Because watching Clarke’s Scotland no longer feels like the chore it’s always been supposed to be. All these years of being conditioned into believing it was meant to bring about a permanent state of anxiety with the occasional stop off at deep despair? All gone. Replaced by a wonderful sense of joy and enlightenment.
And never has it felt quite as sexy or surreal as it did here in Larnaca last night as Clarke and his players stepped out into a cauldron and managed to melt even more hearts before they swaggered off into the distance, towards Euro 2024 in Germany like the hottest tickets in town. Well, how can you fail to swoon at what these players are achieving in our country’s name?
When the outstanding Scott McTominay bagged an early opener he became the joint top scorer in the entire competition – alongside an ex-Man United team-mate Romelu Lukaku and a current one in Rasmus Hojlund. Ryan Porteous doubled Scotland’s lead with only 15 minutes on the clock and then John McGinn edged closer to Kenny Miller and Ally McCoist in the list of Scotland’s all time greatest goalscorers with a sublime third. All done and dusted before the half-time break.
Honestly, what is not to love about this team which sits top of Group A with a record breaking five wins from five and even history in its sights? With so very much at stake, it ought to have been an absolute stress-ball of an ordeal.
