Everton manager Sean Dyche caused a stir when he abandoned his usual shirt and tie for training gear on the touchline as his side defeated Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park on Sunday.
The Blues boss has usually been suited and booted on matchdays since taking charge last year but following the 6-0 thrashing at Chelsea, the 52-year-old adopted a new look. Dyche had discussed his attire in a Football, Music and Me interview with Geoff Shreeves and although he explained the origins of his usual smart dress code for games, he did hint that a change might be on the cards.
When Shreeves suggested that Dyche doesn’t mix things up too much when it comes to his choice of clothes on the touchline, he said: “There was an origin to that. When I was at Watford, Aidy Boothroyd came in, took over and did an amazing job straight away, got promoted and all that.
“He brought me back as a coach and we were rambling on one day and I used to ask him about how he was doing it and all that and it got mentioned about a suit.
“He said: ‘I was a pretty unknown lower league footballer who got a managerial job and as we were going up the ladder and started winning and we were pushing, I was having a go at the ref one day, trying to get his attention and he wouldn’t look at me. I went and knocked on his door and asked what’s that all about, could you not hear me, I’m trying to get your attention, I just wanted to ask you something that was relevant to the game and the was a stop in play.’
“The ref said: ‘Aidy, I didn’t know who you were. Your staff all look the same because you all had training kit on.
“So he went: ‘Bang, clocked it, that’s different,’ so he got a suit on. So I thought if you want to be a manager then look like one.”
