Galway United 0
Bohemians 2
Bohemians turned in a dominant display in Galway to record their first win under new manager Alan Reynolds.
Jevon Mills and Oluwaseun Akintunde headed home set-pieces expertly delivered by Dayle Rooney in either half to seal a valuable three points.
It was a pulsating start from the visitors, who should have been ahead early. Jordan Flores caught a corner on the volley, his shot only thwarted by a Conor McCormack goal-line clearance.
It was a frantic first ten minutes in and around the United box. Brendan Clarke saved from Paddy Kirk twice. James McManus was close as well with an effort from the edge of the box.
Rooney eventually unlocked the defence. A super free-kick in the 21st minute reached Mills. The defender’s glancing header nestled in the far corner for a deserved lead.
Bohs remained rampant and Dylan Connolly was unlucky not to double the lead shortly after, Clarke tipping over a good effort after United were turned over deep.
There was some threat from United, who grew into the game in the second quarter. Positive play from Aodh Dervin resulted in a chance for Ed McCarthy whose shot was tame. Karl O’Sullivan’s header before the break had Kacper Chorazka worried but he gathered well.
A second set-piece seemed to seal it for Bohs inside the hour. Another curled Rooney delivery found an unmarked Akintunde, who powered home from six yards.
United did come close to getting back into the contest. Sub Francely Lomboto’s first touch, a diving header, was cleared off the line heroically by Mills. Fellow sub Patrick Hickey was inches wide with a header from close range from another corner. But Bohemians dealt admirably with the onslaught to win.
