Manchester United 's main priority in January is to ease their financial situation - not bring in more new faces.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has just come on board to take control of football operations, which includes their recruitment strategy. The club want to ensure they are in a strong position come the summer, which would allow the British billionaire to attack the market.
There is concern over breaching financial rules, with the Premier League demonstrating their willingness to sanction teams this season. ESPN reports that the situation as Old Trafford is still "tight" which has largely dictated their strategy in the new year.
Erik ten Hag has been allowed to spend big sums in successive summers since coming aboard. In his first transfer window he spent over £200million to land the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Antony. 12 months on and he spent similar sums, this time on the likes of Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund.
As a result of that outlay much of this January has been spent getting players off their books, even if it is only temporarily. Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek have both headed to Germany on loan.
Director of football John Murtough warned of their January agenda last month when he told a fans’ forum: “Looking ahead to the January transfer window, we are not expecting it to be particularly busy. There will always be the possibility of deals around the edges of the squad, particularly in terms of finding opportunities for players who are not playing as much football as they would like.
