Sir Jim Ratcliffe has ruled Manchester United out of the race to sign Kylian Mbappe, insisting the club are instead focused on finding the next superstar.
Mbappe will leave PSG at the end of the season and is expected to join Real Madrid, though his next destination is yet to be officially confirmed. United have previously been linked with a move for the Frenchman, as have virtually every big team in Europe.
Ratcliffe took over all football matters at Old Trafford in February after completing his deal for a 25 percent stake in United. And he is aiming to move the Red Devils away from making marquee signings.
Instead, he wants to take United back to their roots and look to sign the next generation of superstars. That means there will be no move for Mbappe, with Ratcliffe pulling United out of contention.
"In a way also, I would rather sign the next Mbappe rather than spend a fortune trying to buy success. It's not that clever is it buying Mbappe, anyone can figure that one out," Ratcliffe told The Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast.
"What's much more challenging is to find the next Mbappe or the next Bellingham or the next Roy Keane. The Class of 92 and Ronaldo was only 16 or 17 when he came. The solution is not to spend a lot of money on a couple of great players.
"They've done that if you look at the last 10 years. The first thing we need to do is get the right people in the right boxes in the organising of the club. Then make can get recruitment right. It's such a vital part of a football club today, getting recruitment right."
