Sir Keir Starmer ridicules Rishi Sunak Arsenal takeover question with seven-word jibe

Arsenal fan and Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer claimed he did not want to see Prime Minister Rishi Sunak takeover the Gunners because he would like the team to win.

Starmer was a surprise guest on the Sky Max show Fantasy Football this week hosted by fellow Gunner Matt Lucas, Elis James and Andrew Mensah. The 61-year-old politician was joined on the sofa by Chelsea manager Emma Hayes as the pair discussed the week's football action and their Fantasy Premier League teams for the forthcoming weekend.

Mensah took the opportunity to grill Starmer about his support for the Gunners with the Labour leader explaining he did not sit in the so-called 'posh seats' and instead has been a season ticket holder at the Emirates Stadium since it opened. Sunak, whose net worth alongside his wife Akshata Murty is believed to be £730m, is believed to be a Southampton supporter.

However, Starmer aimed a barb at his opposite number, saying: «I think he went once last season, which was the game they got relegated in.» This opened the door to Mensah asking whether he would welcome Sunak buying Arsenal in the future to which the Labour leader's response was: «No! I want my club to win.»

Later in the programme, Starmer was handed the tough ultimatum as to whether he would prefer Labour to win the election are Arsenal to win the Premier League. He replied: «I’d like the Double,» which was met with applause from the audience.

The United Kingdom is set to head to the ballot booths this year to elect a new government at the general election. Starmer's Labour Party has an approximate 18-point lead in the polls over Sunak's Conservative Party.
