LaLiga president Javier Tebas has has bizarrely referenced the 9/11 disaster when speaking about the reputational damage to Spanish football following Luis Rubiales' resignation for kissing Jenni Hermoso.
Rubiales finally announced that he is resigning as Spanish FA president during an interview with Piers Morgan, after weeks of criticism over kissing Hermoso after Spain won the Women's World Cup.
Monday marks the 22nd anniversary of the attacks which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people, and counting, as illnesses to this day continue to affect first responders.
Tebas, speaking less than a day after Rubiales' resignation, said in a press conference as per Mundo Deportivo: 'I am not going to speak because I want to hear the interview he has given for two hours.
'We have gone from a suspended or resigned president. I will wait for your statements. I am not going to comment on his management, you know.
'The reputational damage being done to Spanish football is tremendous. It's the biggest digital media story in history. Bigger than 9/11.'
Tebas went on to add: 'Yesterday when he resigned I was putting on my pyjamas and went to sleep. Reputational damage must be saved. It's going to cost us a lot.'
Rubiales promised to 'defend his innocence' after announcing his resignation.
He tweeted as his decision to resign was made public on Piers Morgan Uncensored: 'I will defend my honourability. I will defend my innocence.
'I have faith in the future. I have faith in the truth. Thanks to everybody.'
He finished his tweet by posting a photo of the Spanish flag.
FIFA handed him an initial 90-day suspension, and are pushing to ban him for longer, and the Spanish FA publicly apologised for his behaviour.
