Thierry Henry is currently leading the race to be appointed France U21 manager, RMC Sport reports this afternoon. As Mohamed Toubache reported today, the Arsenal legend was interviewed on Monday by the French FA with a view to replace Sylvain Ripoll. The Breton has been dismissed following an underwhelming stint as head of Les Bleuets that ended with a disappointing exit at the hands of Ukraine in the 2023 European Championships’ quarterfinals. The well-informed insider understands that the French Minister of Sports is reportedly pushing hard for Henry to lead France’s squad for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
RMC Sport adds that Henry is indeed the favourite to replace Ripoll. French FA president Philippe Diallo, executive committee member Marc Keller and Technical director Hubert Fournier are conducting interviews to find the ideal candidate to take over Les Bleuets. Former Lille manager Jocelyn Gourvennec is said to have impressed during his interview, but Henry remains the front-runner. The French FA had already proposed Henry the women’s national team hotseat – but he declined and the FA eventually opted for Hervé Renard.
It remains to be seen whether Henry would accept such an important position within the France national team set-up. The legendary France striker would need to give up several advertising and TV contracts – Henry is a Ligue 1 pundit for Amazon Prime Video Sport and CBS Sports Golazo co-host for Champions League nights. RMC Sport adds that Henry envisioned himself coaching a Ligue 1 side some months ago.
