Thierry Henry swerves question about becoming France U21s manager
Thierry Henry refused to comment on reports that he will take over the France U21s job - with French outlets saying he could be appointed today.
And the Arsenal legend wriggled away from questions about his future in his trademark humorous fashion live on television.
The 46-year old asked for an ad break and pretended he had seen a goal on Amazon Prime's coverage of the 1-1 draw between RC Lens and Rennes in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
'Ad break, ad break, we need an ad break!' and 'goal, goal!' he jested, laughing with co-host Thibault Le Rol and turning towards the pitch before pulling a series of funny faces. 'Yes, I think that there is an U21s team,' he also quipped.
Mail Sport reported earlier this month that the 46-year-old was the favourite to take on the vacant post with the 2024 Paris Olympics looming next year.
Now, L'Equipe are claiming that the confirmation of his appointment should take place later today.
Seeing that he wasn't going to get a serious answer out of Henry, the presenter recognised: 'He wants to stay quiet on this news.'
He added: 'We wish you the best, whether that's there or with us [at Amazon].'
France's Football Association sacked U21s manager Sylvain Ripoll at the end of July after six years in charge, having most recently crashed out to Ukraine in the quarter-finals of the U21s Euros.
Henry is the preferred candidate of the French Ministry of Sports ahead of Sabri Lamouchi, Jocelyn Gourvennec, and Julien Stephan.
After a stellar career in the game, Henry's stock among the younger generation skyrocketed due to his social-media friendly work with CBS Sports, where he has been an analyst for their Champions League coverage since September 2021.
