Liverpool went 1-0 down for the ninth time in the Premier League this season. That statistic can be countered by the fact they had come back to win five of the previous five, drawing two and only losing once. But it is worrying nevertheless.
These slow starts could cost Liverpool dearly, with them not really playing at their best in at the beginning of a few other matches, too. Arsenal punished Liverpool’s early sloppiness here as they had a decent chance inside the first minute and then led after four minutes.
It is in contrast to the first great Jurgen Klopp team in England, who often made electric starts to matches. It is not a worry given they often grow into games but there is a feeling that one of these days it could cost Liverpool dearly if an opposition team was more clinical in front of goal.
With just four league goals this season, it is easy to get rather frustrated at Gabriel Jesus’ profligacy in the penalty area. But he showed his all-round qualities here, especially in the first half, as Arsenal tried to nullify the Anfield atmosphere.
He kept the ball well, was constantly an outlet and offered good hold-up play. On a number of occasions, the Brazilian looked like he was about to lose possession but somehow bailed himself out with his quick, close control.
It is a useful asset to any manager, especially in these tight away matches at tough stadiums. As Arsenal looked to kill Liverpool’s threat, Jesus allowed Mikel Arteta’s men to keep possession and thus gain control in the game.
Sadly, that faded in the second half as Liverpool grew into the game, but Jesus highlighted why he is so highly rated by Arteta, with it not lost that Pep Guardiola also often turned to the Brazilian for big games, too.
