Tottenham Hotspur will have to take their current squad limits into account when deciding who they sign, loan and sell in the coming summer transfer window.
When all of their loan players are at the club, Ange Postecoglou has a huge squad with a whole host of players reaching the final year of their contracts. Many of the decisions to be made over their futures could also take into account where the squad meets or fails to meet certain requirements in the registration rules for both Premier League and European football, if Spurs qualify for continental competition for next season.
We've taken a look at the rules for both domestic and European football and where Tottenham sit within it all with their potential squad for next season.
First off, let's get straight into the nitty gritty of the rules. Tottenham will have to name a 25-man squad to the Premier League for next season. Within that, clubs cannot register more than 17 non-homegrown players on the list and the remainder of the squad, up to a total of 25, must be homegrown.
The Premier League states that a homegrown player means «a player who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21)».
Clubs are also able to name players 21 and under within an Under-21 list, which frees up space in the main 25-man squad. For the 2024/25 campaign, Under-21 players will have had to be born on or after January 1, 2003 to make the list.
