West Ham hope to know where they stand in their chase for Kalvin Phillips later today.
The Manchester City midfielder has long been on the wishlist of David Moyes, even prior to his £42million transfer from Leeds United in 2022, and the West Ham boss has been dogged in his pursuit.
West Ham though are well aware that the likes of Juventus have made an approach while Newcastle United were also keen. Other elite European sides have made their interest known too while Crystal Palace and Fulham have thrown their hats into the ring.
Manchester City want Phillips' future resolved and expect to have better understanding on who are the main contenders over the next 24 hours.
City were willing to loan Phillips out last summer amid interest from Liverpool among others when the loan fee was believed to be around £10m. This window it is understood to be around half that but no less substantial considering Phillips' wages too.
That has been deemed prohibitive by Newcastle who are limited on spending and by Juventus. Both camps also have reservations about how quickly Phillips can get up to full match sharpness after just 14 games this season and limited starts.
West Ham though have stayed in the mix with Moyes convinced he can get the best out of Phillips. They have the added bonus of still being in Europe and sixth in the Premier League table. They are looking for a compromise on the fee and salary but would also be eager to make the deal permanent in the summer. That could yet appeal to City if the other big clubs drop out.
Moyes has been looking to add another attacker following injuries to Michail Antonio and Lucas Paqueta but the addition of Phillips would allow him to shuffle other versatile players forward. The West Ham boss
