Troy Deeney says he lost job for 'non-manager reasons' - 'I've got to shut my mouth'

Troy Deeney believes he was sacked as Forest Green Rovers boss for non-football reasons, and not because of the team's poor results.

The 35 year old says he's keen to learn from his mistakes and is eager to get back into management.

Deeney admires the work of Darren Moore and Liam Rosenior, two black managers who are succeeding in the EFL, and is determined to learn as much as possible from them.

However, he believes that black managers should be given opportunities based on their skills, not because of their race. «I don't try to make it a black or white issue. I make it about being the best.,» says Deeney, who played over 100 Premier League games for Watford.

«Unfortunately I lost my job for non-manager reasons, it was more for talking, so I've realised I've got to shut my mouth a little bit. But fundamentally, I would feel like I didn't get enough time.»

We don't want to get to a point ever where we do tokenism and just start giving people jobs and then they fall short and it sets everyone back 10 years anyway. My role now is to learn, recoup, refocus and go again, and that's what we'll do.
