Former Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner has opened up about his decision to leave the Gunners and join Nottingham Forest this summer
USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner has delivered an honest assessment of his decision to leave Arsenal, including a surprising claim about the Premier League.
Signed by the Gunners from New England Revolution in February, Turner eventually arrived in north London that summer but remained on the bench as back-up to Aaron Ramsdale during the club’s challenge for the Premier League title. The USA international was used on seven occasions in cup competitions but still found himself replaced by Ramsdale for the second leg of Arsenal’s Europa League knockout defeat to Sporting.
On the international stage, Turner has helped guide USA to Gold Cup and Nations League glory, as well as being first-choice at the 2022 World Cup. However, the shot-stopper was acutely aware that he could not keep sitting on the sidelines, despite Arsenal’s progress under Mikel Arteta.
Turner completed a £10million ($12.75million) move to Nottingham Forest in the summer and, ironically, made his Premier League debut against the Gunners in the opening game of the season. He was handed the No.1 shirt upon his arrival in the East Midlands and has explained why it was necessary for him to leave Arsenal.
"I think towards the end of the season when I felt like there was games that I could have been playing that I wasn't even getting really a sniff of them," Turner told Goal. "I was training really well, doing, I felt like, everything in my power to get myself minutes on the team and that just wasn't happening for me.
