Vivianne Miedema pinpoints 'special' Arsenal weapon after Liverpool win

Even as the heady strains of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' echoed around Prenton Park, the travelling support made sure they could be heard.

'Arsenal! Arsenal! Arsenal', was the rallying cry from the Cowshed End as the crowd — a sea of red and white — rose to applaud their team onto the pitch. “What makes us unique is our supporters," manager Jonas Eidevall had admitted proudly ahead of the game.

«It’s how they fill the Emirates, it’s how they travel in numbers. It’s incredible and when I think about what it was like two-and-a-half years ago to where we are now, there’s been incredible movement.»

For the Arsenal boss, though, it was not only the sizable travelling contingent that added some extra gravity to Sunday's showdown with Liverpool. The clash with Matt Beard's side marked Eidevall's 100th match in charge of the Gunners and anything other than a victory for the visitors would, perhaps, cast a long shadow over what has largely been a successful century of games at the helm for the Swede.

In spite of the magnitude of the occasion, the opening exchanges were fairly unremarkable, with Arsenal enjoying the majority of the ball but failing to turn their dominance into a tangible advantage. Both Alessia Russo and Victoria Pelova took aim at the Liverpool goal inside the first 20 minutes but their efforts were comfortably dealt with by Reds' shot-stopper Rachael Laws.

And it was the hosts who had the best opportunity to take the lead when Jasmine Matthews' inviting delivery into the box was flicked on to Grace Fisk, but the former West Ham defender failed to convert from just a few yards out. Yana Daniels, too, should have done better when she turned Melissa Lawley's low cross over the bar on the stroke of half-time.
