OGC Nice’s goal-scoring woes have been well-documented this season. Despite currently sitting fourth in Ligue 1, the club have scored just 22 goals; only FC Metz and Clermont Foot, both of whom are in the relegation zone, have scored fewer.
Whilst Les Aiglons have the best defence in the league, having conceded just 15 ahead of Matchday 24, Francesco Farioli’s side have been less successful going forward. Terem Moffi is currently Nice’s top-scorer with six goals; a third of those came in a single match against Paris Saint-Germain in September.
Farioli’s side have not scored in their last two matches. After a slender 1-0 defeat to Olympique Lyonnais and a 0-0 draw against Clermont Foot, that lack of incision up-front is – finally – beginning to cost the team points. Speaking after Le Gym’s draw against Clermont Foot, defender Melvin Bard (23) alluded to a mental block.
“It’s true that at times we’re on the pitch and we tell ourselves we’ll never score. It’s hard mentally. We have faith in our teammates. Any player can score at any time. We need to continue to work,” said the Frenchman, who has competed in all 23 of Les Aiglons’ Ligue 1 fixtures so far this season.
