West Ham managed a comeback victory against Wolves, winning 2-1, but suffered a blow as Jarrod Bowen was injured just days before their Europa League face-off with Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen. James Ward-Prowse scored directly from a corner in the 84th minute, taking advantage of the wind at Molineux, after Lucas Paqueta's 72nd-minute penalty had equalised an earlier goal from Pablo Sarabia.
Wolves captain Maximilian Kilman thought he had levelled the score in the ninth minute of stoppage time, but his header was disallowed for offside following a VAR review. The victory brings West Ham on par with Manchester United in the race for Europa League qualification, with the Hammers now sitting sixth in the Premier League.
However, their European ambitions could be hampered by Bowen's injury sustained early in the second half. David Moyes' squad have now secured 19 points from losing positions this season, although this marks only their third league win of 2024.
The Hammers missed an early opportunity to take the lead 11 minutes into the game, when Bowen intercepted a pass from Nelson Semedo and sent a low ball to Tomas Soucek near the goal. Unfortunately, the Czech Republic international couldn't control the ball.
Wolves took control of the game after a key moment, with Rayan Ait-Nouri, usually a left-back but recently playing in a more attacking role, leading the charge.
Ait-Nouri, who had scored three goals in his previous four games, nearly added another to his tally when he sprinted the length of the pitch and into the box, only for Kurt Zouma to make a crucial slide tackle just as he was about to shoot. Tommy Doyle also tested veteran goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who was filling in for the injured Alphonse Areola.
